EPQ and Inspired to Achieve

We are strong believers at Fullbrook 6 that academic subjects alone do not equip students for the next steps in their lives. For this reason, we run two courses which allow our students to develop the skills and qualities that make them stand out from their peers when applying for universities, apprenticeships or jobs.

Inspired to Achieve is a project created by and for Fullbrook 6 students. It involves students receiving talks from leaders in industry and education about the soft skills that will equip them for top jobs and universities for the future. This includes talks as diverse as interview skills, public speaking, IT skills and making small talk with strangers. The course culminates with students presenting on a research project of their choice.

This leads on to the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), a course recognised in UCAS points, that is a 5,000 word essay or artefact produced at the end of extensive research into a subject students feel passionate about. All students are supported by a staff supervisor throughout the course of their research.

The two projects combined mean our students leave Fullbrook 6 ready prepared for an increasingly competitive labour market.

Tutor Programme and Academic Mentoring

Every student in Fullbrook 6 will be allocated to a tutor related to their set of subjects. This is done to equip students for the increased demands of A-Levels and ensure that the advice they receive is consistent with the faculty. The tutor group consists of a combination of Year 12 & 13 students, allowing the students to learn from each other and build a cohesive sixth form.

Students attend a collective tutor session twice a week, during which time they look at plans for the future, contemporary issues that are important for young people to understand and competitions that are ensure a sense of community within our small sixth form. The bonds students form with their tutor groups and indeed their tutor last for a lifetime.

Students also receive one-to-one support Academic Mentoring sessions with their tutor in order to ensure their wellbeing and academic performance are supported before they might become a problem and ensure students feel equipped for navigating a challenging transition to the adult world. Central to the value of Academic Mentoring is support students through the UCAS process or letters of application to employers.
